Improving smallholder income from domestic food markets

Publié par amadou dans: Mes publications .

A growing demand: the need to be competitive.

Many African economies still depend heavily on export crops, such as cocoa, tea and coffee. However the development impact
of agricultural exports, compared to sales in domestic markets, is subject to debate (KIT, 2012). For African farmers, the greatest
opportunities seem to be found in the rapidly growing domestic food markets. Population increase, urbanization and an expanding
middle class underpin a booming demand for food. By 2050, 60% of Africans – about 1.2 billion people – will live in cities, compared
to 28% in 1980 (FAO, 2009).Article on CFC funded projects_Ellen
