The African continent is inhabited by around 1.2 billion people. The population will be of 2.1 billion with 50% of youth aging 15 years (2014). However Africa is still depending on importations of cereals. These reached in 2012 about 12 million tons.
In order to overcome this so called « tyranny of cereals » and at the same time create best conditions for the decrease of rice importations, an Integrated Development Model (IDM) was developed. The model creates synergy between agro-business and smallholder farming systems with the objective to satisfy the needs in food security and also to generate value addition and employs for youth and women. It promotes the rice industry as a connection point of the rice value chain and support tool for an efficient use of smallholder farming.
